Mohamed Zougrana’s goal in the 43rd minute separated the both sides as Burkina Faso edged out Sierra Leone 1-0 during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match at the SKD Stadium in Monrovia, Liberia.
This victory elevates Burkina Faso to 18 points, securing second place and keeping their chances alive for a playoff spot as one of the best losers. Conversely, Sierra Leone’s loss significantly dims their hopes of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.
The Stallions displayed solid strategy throughout the match, effectively controlling possession in their own half while creating attacking opportunities in the final third. The team, composed of more experienced players, demonstrated their capabilities on the pitch at SKD Stadium.
Looking ahead, Sierra Leone will face Djibouti in an away match, while Burkina Faso is set to host Ethiopia. However, the results of these upcoming matches won’t impact Burkina Faso’s playoff aspirations.
After the Djibouti match, Sierra Leone will not compete again until the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers, which begin in March 2026.
