Sierra Leone Maritime Administration (SLMA) launched a vital two-day training program for boat owners in the Western Area Rural, specifically targeting the Tombo community.

Held at Saint Peter’s Hall, the initiative brought together over 70 participants, with the goal of enhancing safety, efficiency, and operational standards within the local maritime sector.

The opening ceremony was led by Mr. Ansumana Massaquoi, Head of Inland Waterways at SLMA, who underscored the importance of continuous education in reducing boating accidents and improving operator performance.

“Every year, we prioritize the training of boat owners,” said Massaquoi. “This year’s program will include a certification process and direct assessments by our trainers to ensure all participants are properly equipped to operate safely and responsibly.”

Emmanuel Pious Richard, Director of Research, Marine Education and Training at SLMA, served as the lead facilitator and keynote speaker. Addressing participants, he emphasized the life-saving value of the knowledge being shared.

“The skills you acquire here can help you manage emergencies and even provide basic first aid,” Richard said. “This training will also be extended to other districts, including Kassa and beyond, to maximize its impact on maritime safety across the country.”

Richard also emphasized the need for female participation in the traditionally male-dominated sector. “We cannot allow this training to be a male-dominated space. Women play a crucial role in spreading safety information and ensuring family and community preparedness,” he added.

His message was well received by the attendees and highlighted the inclusive nature of the SLMA’s approach. Among the participants was Hassan Kamara, a boat owner and returning trainee, who expressed his appreciation for the program:

“This is my second time attending, and I truly value SLMA’s consistent support. I now feel more confident in training others on safety practices,” he shared.

Kamara’s experience illustrates the ripple effect of the SLMA’s efforts empowering individuals who, in turn, pass on knowledge to others in the maritime community.

As the training progresses, the SLMA hopes to establish a network of informed and responsible boat operators, capable of navigating the country’s waterways safely and efficiently. The initiative forms part of a broader governmental commitment to enhancing maritime safety and operational standards nationwide.
