With strong support from the Chairman of the Gold and Diamond Dealers Association in Kono District, Mr. Ibrahim Jawara, the NICOB Technical and Vocational Institute has successfully conducted its final practical food testing examination for students enrolled in its catering department. These students recently completed a six-week training program aimed at equipping them with employable culinary skills.
The final food testing ceremony was held at the institute’s premises in Sukudu, Koidu City, and attracted stakeholders from various sectors across the district.
Explaining the vision behind the establishment of the institute, Director Ishmael Kabba stated that NICOB was founded to empower young people in Kono District especially those who, due to financial constraints, could not access formal education. By offering technical and vocational training, the institute aims to contribute meaningfully to both local and national development.
Director Kabba highlighted five core training components offered at the institute including hairdressing, tailoring, catering, software and hardware packages and basic life skills training.
He called on stakeholders, NGOs, and humanitarian organizations operating in Kono to support this capacity-building effort. He also expressed deep appreciation to Chairman Ibrahim Jawara for his consistent contributions toward youth empowerment and urged him to continue his goodwill initiatives, which he described as critical to transforming the district’s youthful population.
Speaking at the event, Josephine Johnson, a tutor in the catering department, noted that the program runs for one month and two weeks and is designed to teach students how to professionally prepare a variety of recipes. The final examination involves food preparation and presentation, which is assessed by the institute’s management and staff before certificates are awarded to successful candidates.
Speaking on behalf of the graduating students, Juliet Finda Kellie expressed gratitude to the management and staff of NICOB, as well as to Chairman Jawara, for providing them with the opportunity to acquire life-changing skills. She emphasized that the training has empowered them to become productive members of society.
This initiative stands as a significant step toward enhancing middle-level manpower in Kono District and underscores the vital role of private-sector support in youth development.
