Deputy Environment Minister Mima Yeama Sobba-Stephens represented Sierra Leone at the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Ministerial Roundtable, focusing on plastic pollution.

The event was part of the second phase of the INC5 (Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee) negotiations, which are aimed at establishing a global binding agreement to address the growing plastic crisis.

During the roundtable, Sobba-Stephens shared Sierra Leone’s progress and challenges in managing plastic waste. She emphasized the urgent environmental and economic impacts of plastic pollution, particularly on vulnerable communities and ecosystems. “Plastic pollution is a pressing challenge that demands immediate and coordinated action from all nations,” she stated.

The Deputy Minister advocated for a strong international framework to regulate plastic use and waste management, stressing the importance of a binding global agreement for effective governance. “We must work together to establish clear guidelines and responsibilities for all countries,” she urged, emphasizing the need for collective action in tackling this critical issue.

Sierra Leone’s participation in the UNEP roundtable underscores the nation’s commitment to environmental sustainability and its proactive efforts to mitigate plastic pollution. The government is actively promoting strategies that encourage recycling, waste reduction, and sustainable practices to minimize the environmental impact of plastics.

As discussions continue at the INC5 negotiations, Sobba-Stephens expressed optimism that the collective efforts of participating nations would lead to meaningful outcomes. With significant stakes for both environmental health and public well-being, Sierra Leone remains dedicated to advocating for effective solutions that will benefit not only its citizens but the global community as a whole.
