In celebration of ONAM 2025, the Sierra Leone Indian Muslim Association (SLIMA) has partnered with the Sierra Leone Badminton Association to host a week-long badminton tournament at the Shankerdas Badminton Court in Wellington.
The tournament features 16 teams from across the country, significantly contributing to the growth of badminton in Sierra Leone. To promote gender balance, both SLIMA and the Sierra Leone Badminton Association fielded two female teams in this year’s competition.
The SLIMA teams include Indiana nationals, while the Sierra Leone Badminton Association’s teams consist of both male and female players, reflecting their commitment to building a stronger squad for international representation.
Yusufu A. Bangura, the Acting President of the Sierra Leone Badminton Association, expressed his satisfaction with the tournament’s impact. He noted that this event marks the first local competition hosted by the Association since he took office. This year’s event featured representatives from Bo, Kenema, Kailahun, and Kono in the National Championship.
Bangura praised the players for their impressive performances throughout the championship and encouraged them to continue striving for excellence.
The SLIMA Shankerdas Badminton Team secured the gold medals and trophy, while the Sierra Leone Badminton Association’s male team claimed the silver medals and trophy. Additionally, the ladies’ doubles team from the Sierra Leone Badminton Association won gold medals and a trophy.
The atmosphere was filled with excitement among players and officials, as both parties look forward to a rebranding effort and greater focus in December 2025.
The Sierra Leone Badminton Association is also planning an international training opportunity later this month in the Czech Republic, preparing for more international competitions ahead.
