August marks Youth Month in Sierra Leone a time dedicated to celebrating young people and investing in their growth, rights, and potential. The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) is leading the way with a series of initiatives aimed at expanding access to sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) information and services across the country.
Since establishing its presence in Sierra Leone in 1971, UNFPA has remained committed to promoting the health and rights of women and girls. During Youth Month, the organization is amplifying these efforts by tackling critical issues such as ending harmful practices, promoting youth leadership, and creating safe, inclusive spaces for adolescents and young adults.
UNFPA’s current activities include providing technical support to the Government of Sierra Leone and working in collaboration with key partners to strengthen policies and programs related to sexual and reproductive health, gender equality, and adolescent well-being.
The agency remains particularly focused on reducing preventable maternal deaths, ddressing unmet needs for family planning and combating gender-based violence.
“The empowerment of youth is essential to the future of our nation,” said a UNFPA representative. “By investing in their health and rights, we are unlocking their potential to contribute meaningfully to society.”
As part of its Youth Month engagements, UNFPA is encouraging young people to participate in open discussions on these pressing issues, thereby fostering a culture of leadership, responsibility, and inclusion.
The organization’s commitment to addressing the unique challenges faced by young people reflects a broader vision of building a healthier, more equitable, and resilient society.
With strong collaboration between youth, government agencies, and community stakeholders, UNFPA aims to drive meaningful change not only throughout Youth Month but well beyond.
As activities continue throughout August, the focus remains clear to equip every young person with the knowledge, support, and opportunities they need to thrive and shape Sierra Leone’s future.
