Francis Ben Kaifala, Commissioner of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), hosted a high-level delegation from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Court of Justice at the ACC headquarters in Freetown on Thursday  31st July 2025. The delegation included the President and Vice President of the ECOWAS Court, along with Sierra Leone’s Deputy Minister of Justice.

The purpose of the visit was to foster regional collaboration on corruption and human rights, recognizing their deep interconnection across West Africa.

In his remarks, Commissioner Kaifala emphasized that corruption is not merely a legal infraction, but a serious impediment to the realization of fundamental human rights.

“Corruption is not only a legal violation but also a significant barrier to the realization of human rights across the region,” he said, calling on the ECOWAS Court to shape jurisprudence that prioritizes anti-corruption efforts.

Discussions during the meeting centered on how the ECOWAS Court can use its regional mandate to promote accountability, justice, and good governance across member states. Commissioner Kaifala advocated for the Court’s involvement in creating and strengthening legal frameworks that embed anti-corruption as a pillar of human rights enforcement.

“This meeting was quite enriching,” Kaifala remarked, expressing optimism about future collaborations with the regional court. “We look forward to building partnerships that not only fight corruption but also uphold the rule of law across West Africa.”

The visit highlighted a growing consensus within the region that corruption must be tackled as a human rights concern, not just a governance issue. It also reaffirmed the ACC’s commitment to working with regional partners to develop robust legal and institutional responses to corruption.

As Sierra Leone intensifies its anti-corruption campaign, this engagement marks a significant step toward fostering regional cooperation and strengthening mechanisms that protect the rights and dignity of citizens across West Africa.
