The Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs has officially recognized Alhaji Sheikh Ahmed Bangura as the new Susu Tribal Head for the Western Area.

The recognition ceremony took place on Friday, 25th July 2025, at the Ministry’s Conference Hall in the Youyi Building, Freetown, and was attended by a large crowd, including community elders, tribal leaders, government officials, and supporters.

In his keynote address before presenting the medallion and certificate of chieftaincy, Minister of Local Government and Community Affairs, Tamba Lamina, explained the selection process for tribal heads in the Western Area. He clarified that tribal leaders are chosen by their communities from among interested candidates, after which the Ministry makes a recommendation to the President for official approval.

Minister Lamina reaffirmed his Ministry’s commitment to supporting the new tribal head in advancing the Susu community’s development agenda. He called on Alhaji Sheikh Ahmed Bangura to focus on unity, peaceful coexistence, and collaborative leadership.

“You must exercise patience and humility in discharging your duties,” Minister Lamina advised. “And when challenges arise, remember that the Ministry and the Council of Tribal Heads are your first points of contact.”

In his acceptance speech, Alhaji Sheikh Ahmed Bangura thanked his people for the trust and confidence placed in him. He pledged to unite the Susu community and promote peace and development.

“I will not let you down. Together, we will work in the best interest of our community,” he said.

Mr. Brima Newman Combey, Director of Local Government in the Ministry, cautioned against repeating past mistakes specifically, the burial of the late Susu tribal head with the medallion, which is a state property meant to be passed on. He urged the community to rally behind their new leader and support his vision for growth.

Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella, a respected Susu elder from a chieftaincy family, pledged to support and advise the new tribal head when needed. He emphasized the importance of continuity and guidance in traditional leadership.

The Chairman of the Council of Tribal Heads in the Western Area, Kono Tribal Head Olanda Gbekey, also expressed his support on behalf of his fellow chiefs. He encouraged the new Susu tribal head to seek advice whenever he faces difficulties.

“You are not alone in this journey,” Gbekey said. “The Council and the Ministry are here to support you.”

Other speakers at the event included the new Permanent Secretary of the Ministry and representatives from various tribal councils, all of whom made meaningful contributions and expressed their willingness to collaborate with the newly recognized chief.

The ceremony marked a significant moment for the Susu community in Sierra Leone, ushering in a new era of leadership rooted in peace, inclusivity, and development.
