The Sports Writers Association of Sierra Leone (SWASAL) on the 14th of July, 2025 sanctioned all media coverage of the ongoing 2025-26 Sierra Leone domestic league, “Leone Rock Premier League” for which the Association stated as “blatant disregard and lack of interest in addressing a violent attack on a colleague”.
This action was triggered by an alleged Wusum Stars Football Club’s supporters against the SWASAL-North Chairman Alusine Rehne Wilson who was left with a wound on his head while conducting a post-match interview at the Makeni Wusum Field during Wusum Stars FC Vs Bo Rangers FC on the 30th of March 2025.
Sahr Moris Jnr., the President of SWASAL described this action as tough but timely as this is not the first time a sports journalist has been attacked on duty in Sierra Leone and nothing comes out of it.
“Despite official report to the Premier League Board about the incident, it has been met with indifference and a lack of seriousness. The Board’s inaction has emboldened perpetrators of violence against journalists, undermining our safety and freedom to report” he spoke out.
The President further evinced that, the utterance of the current Premier League Board chairman, Mark Ngbegba Esq. on the issue left every member taunted “SWASAL can go ahead and do whatever you feel like doing” remarked Ngbegba Esq.
SWASAL in its press release demanded three thematic resolutions; Immediate investigation, accountability and respect for journalists.
