In a significant step toward strengthening international agricultural collaboration, Sierra Leone shared its progress and strategic direction in South-South and Triangular Cooperation (SSTC) during the FAO Regional Policy Dialogue held from July 9 to 10, 2025, in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
Representing the country, Mr. Alpha Yayah Mansaray, Director of Agricultural Extension at the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, presented Sierra Leone’s innovative approaches to agricultural development particularly in rice production informed by a recent study tour to Uganda.
Mr. Mansaray emphasized Sierra Leone’s commitment to expanding its SSTC efforts by establishing a national trust fund and pursuing diversified partnerships, including potential collaboration with Vietnam.
“This platform has strengthened our resolve to deepen SSTC by establishing a national trust fund and seeking diversified partnerships, including with Vietnam, to accelerate our agricultural transformation,” he told delegates.
The regional dialogue brought together policymakers, technical experts, and development partners from across Africa to discuss ways to enhance institutional frameworks, mobilize resources, and scale up successful agricultural practices.
Sierra Leone’s collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and China was recognized as a successful model of international cooperation, demonstrating how shared learning and joint ventures can significantly support national development goals
Mr. Mansaray noted that the event opened new avenues for co-financing projects, addressing critical funding gaps, and promoting long-term sustainability, even amid political transitions.
The insights and partnerships gained from the dialogue are expected to strengthen Sierra Leone’s efforts to achieve food security, economic resilience, and agricultural innovation through the strategic use of SSTC.
As Sierra Leone continues to pursue its agricultural transformation agenda, its active engagement in regional and international platforms like the FAO Dialogue signals a strong commitment to innovation, collaboration, and sustainable development in the agriculture sector.
