Miss Daniella Boima Garrick, a Sierra Leonean with albinism, has made history by becoming Africa’s first-ever “Miss Albinism Africa 2025.” Her victory elevates Sierra Leone’s flag across the continent, showcasing her as a trailblazer for persons with albinism.

The historic event was held in Harare, Zimbabwe’s capital, and brought together contestants with albinism from across Africa competing for the top title of “Mr & Miss Albinism Africa.” Organized by the group “Albinism Dare to Dream Initiative,” the event aims to promote empowerment, self-esteem, and awareness of the rights of persons with albinism across the continent.

Taking place from June 23 to June 28, 2025, the event primarily focused on grooming, public speaking, and resilience among young Africans with albinism. It was part of the broader African Diversity Festival, which celebrated arts, crafts, and cultural expressions.

In her statement, Daniella expressed that her win is not only a personal achievement but also a victory for Sierra Leone and Africa as a whole. She shared her happiness at representing her country in a contest that saw participation from various African nations.

She emphasized that the victory will enable her to advance her advocacy, using the platform to support persons with albinism in Sierra Leone and beyond.

“My win is not just about walking the runway; it’s about sharing the stories of albinos in my country, Sierra Leone, and across Africa as the first Miss Albinism Africa,” she remarked.

Brenda Mudzimu, the Director of the contest organizers, commended Daniella’s achievement, stating that the pageant encourages persons with albinism in Africa to envision a future beyond societal stereotypes.

She added that the event serves as a strategic initiative to educate, empower, and uplift persons with albinism across the continent. Mudzimu praised Garrick’s win as a clear demonstration of transparency, positivity, and progress within the event.

“Daniella’s victory signifies visibility, inclusion, and self-belief. It highlights how individuals with albinism are challenging stereotypes and transforming societal perceptions across Africa,” said Director Mudzimu.

Daniella Boima Garrick is expected to return to Sierra Leone with her crown and award, marking a historic milestone as Africa’s first Miss Albinism Africa 2025.
