Elcome has launched an ambitious initiative to install WELCOME.online Community Wi-Fi hotspots at universities across Sierra Leone, aiming to improve digital connectivity for students and surrounding communities.

Director Jimmy Grewal recently announced the project, noting the overwhelmingly positive feedback received since the initial deployments began.

The initiative delivers high-speed internet access exceeding 200 Mbps, powered by Starlink technology, ensuring low latency even in remote regions. The service is designed to be both affordable and financially sustainable, widening access for students and the general public. Grewal emphasized, “Our priority is to enable as many people as possible to benefit from this connectivity, which is essential for education and development.”

Set for further expansion this summer, the project will extend to additional communities and schools, addressing Sierra Leone’s long-standing need for improved internet infrastructure. This rollout forms part of a broader mission to bridge the country’s digital divide, particularly in underserved areas.

The initiative has received strong support from the government. President Julius Maada Bio’s administration, including Chief Minister David Sengeh and other key officials, has played a crucial role in facilitating the deployment demonstrating the government’s commitment to advancing technology and educational resources nationwide.

As Elcome continues to deploy its Wi-Fi hotspots, the impact on students and faculty is expected to be significant. Access to reliable internet will not only enhance learning opportunities but also drive innovation and socioeconomic development within the wider community.

This project marks a vital step toward building a digitally inclusive Sierra Leone, where high-speed internet is no longer a privilege but a standard resource accessible to all. With continued support and expansion, Elcome is well-positioned to reshape the country’s digital landscape for the better.
