Chief Superintendent Zainab Gbla of the Sierra Leone Police has been awarded the prestigious United Nations Woman Police Officer of the Year Award in recognition of her significant contributions to peacebuilding and the promotion of gender equality within law enforcement.
The award was presented during a ceremony at the United Nations on May 29, 2025, coinciding with International Peacekeepers Day.
UN Women Sierra Leone expressed pride in Gbla’s achievements, emphasizing the vital role women play in fostering peace and security.
“Her efforts demonstrate how women can make a meaningful difference when actively involved in peacebuilding initiatives,” said a representative from UN Women.
Gbla’s recognition comes at a pivotal time as Sierra Leone continues to strengthen gender mainstreaming efforts within the police force. Supported by the Elsie Initiative Fund, these efforts seek to increase women’s participation in peacekeeping and law enforcement, in line with global commitments to gender equality.
The award ceremony also highlighted Gbla’s exceptional leadership and dedication to her community. She has actively mentored young female officers and promoted inclusive practices within the Sierra Leone Police. Her work not only enhances the effectiveness of peacekeeping missions but also inspires future generations of women in law enforcement.
The recognition of Zainab Gbla underscores the growing international acknowledgment of women’s contributions to peace and security. UN Women and the Elsie Initiative Fund remain committed to supporting Sierra Leone’s ongoing efforts to create a more equitable and inclusive environment within the police force.
