In a landmark move toward sustainable energy development, His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio has officially commissioned a 1MW solar power plant in Moyamba, significantly enhancing the region’s electricity supply.

The new facility is designed to complement the existing thermal generators and provide more reliable electricity to local residents, marking a pivotal moment in addressing the region’s long-standing energy challenges.

The solar power plant is part of the government’s broader commitment to building a sustainable energy infrastructure across Sierra Leone. Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, President Bio emphasized the importance of dependable electricity, stating, “We are dedicated to ensuring that you finally have access to the power you’ve longed for.”

Far from being a short-term solution, the solar installation represents a long-term investment in the community’s future. The President urged residents to take ownership of the infrastructure, encouraging them to protect and maintain the facility. “Together, we can make a real difference in our community’s future,” he said.

The project was made possible through the support of international development partners, including The World Bank and UNOPS, whose contributions have been instrumental in advancing Sierra Leone’s energy sector. Their involvement highlights the value of global cooperation in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

As the solar plant becomes fully operational, it is expected to significantly improve electricity availability, stimulate local economic growth, and enhance overall living standards in Moyamba.

This initiative reflects the government’s ongoing efforts to overcome infrastructure barriers and promote renewable energy as a cornerstone of national development. With the launch of the Moyamba solar plant, President Bio not only brings light to the region but also paves the way toward a more resilient and sustainable energy future for Sierra Leone.
