The Ministry of Information and Civic Education (MoICE) recently hosted an engaging Civic Day Series at the Port Loko District Council Hall, featuring a spirited quiz and debate competition designed to enhance students’ understanding of civic responsibility and national identity.

As part of its broader mission to instill patriotism and promote civic participation, MoICE brought together six secondary schools to compete in events focused on local and national issues. The participating schools included Dr. Kadie A. Sesay Government Girls Secondary School, Catholic Junior Secondary School Port Loko, Movement of Faith Junior Secondary School, Maforkie Agricultural Islamic Secondary School, Johanna Kuyvenhoven Model Secondary School, and Free Pentecostal Academy.

During the quiz segment, students answered questions related to Sierra Leone’s national identity, cultural heritage, and systems of governance through a randomized ballot selection process. After three competitive rounds, Catholic Junior Secondary School, Port Loko, emerged as the winner with 18 points, while Johanna Kuyvenhoven Model Secondary School secured second place with 14 points.

The debate competition added further excitement, as students tackled pressing issues such as the impact of social media, the fight against corruption, and the relevance of the national census. The final round centered on the motion: “Port Loko is a key driver for civic education.”

Patient B.S. Turay of Dr. Kadie A. Sesay Government Girls Secondary School was declared the overall debate winner, while Alfred S. Sesay from Johanna Kuyvenhoven Model Secondary School claimed second place. Winners from both the quiz and debate competitions received cash prizes and customized educational materials as rewards for their outstanding performances.

The Civic Day Series continues tomorrow with a town hall meeting featuring eight government ministers, agency heads, and departmental leaders. Key topics in sectors such as Agriculture, Security, Education, Health, Aviation, and Governance will be addressed further reinforcing civic engagement and awareness among citizens.
