The People’s Liberation Army of China, through the Chinese Embassy in Sierra Leone, has officially donated ten orthopedic beds to the Defence Medical Services (DMS) at the 34 Military Hospital, Wilberforce Barracks. The donation ceremony took place on Wednesday, 25th March 2025, marking a significant contribution to enhancing medical care for the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) and the surrounding community.
This donation comes as the 34 Military Hospital undertakes a major expansion from a 150-bed facility to a 600-bed hospital. This upgrade is part of the RSLAF’s efforts to elevate the hospital’s status from a Level 2 to a Level 3 medical center, providing advanced healthcare services for both military personnel and civilians.
In his opening remarks, the Deputy Commandant of the Defence Medical Services, Colonel Dr. G. Luseni, welcomed attendees on behalf of the Commandant. He emphasized the hospital’s commitment to providing quality medical care to RSLAF personnel and the wider Wilberforce community.
“This donation is timely and will be used for the right purpose. We are grateful to the Chinese Government and the People’s Liberation Army for their continuous support in providing technical assistance, infrastructure, and medical equipment,” Dr. Luseni stated.
He highlighted the close collaboration between the DMS and the Chinese Medical Expert Group, which began two weeks ago with an orientation ceremony for newly arrived Chinese medical staff. This partnership, he added, is crucial in ensuring the delivery of adequate medical services.
The Chinese Defence Attaché, Senior Colonel Pu Lin, reaffirmed China’s commitment to strengthening its relationship with Sierra Leone, particularly in the healthcare sector. He praised the collaborative efforts between the Chinese Medical Expert Group and the 34 Military Hospital, emphasizing that the donation reflects the long-standing cooperation between the two nations.
“China and Sierra Leone share a deep and enduring friendship. This donation is part of our continued effort to support the RSLAF and improve healthcare delivery. We are honored to contribute to the hospital’s mission of providing quality medical services,” Senior Colonel Pu Lin remarked.
Receiving the donation, the Chief of Defence Staff of the RSLAF, Major General A. I. Bangura, expressed profound gratitude to the Chinese Government and highlighted the importance of healthcare in promoting national stability. He underscored his commitment to fulfilling the vision of His Excellency, President and Commander-in-Chief of the RSLAF, Brigadier General (Rtd) Dr. Julius Maada Bio (GCRSL), to transform the 34 Military Hospital into a leading healthcare institution in Sierra Leone.
“Our vision is to make the 34 Military Hospital the first point of contact for healthcare delivery in Sierra Leone. Healthcare brings stability, and it is our duty to provide a facility that serves not only the RSLAF but the entire nation,” Major General Bangura declared.
He urged the hospital staff to embrace the President’s vision and work diligently to deliver top-tier medical services. The CDS also commended the dedication of the Defence Medical Services team and assured them of his continued support in improving healthcare standards.
Delivering the vote of thanks, Colonel Dr. Nabieu expressed sincere appreciation to the Chinese Government for the orthopedic beds, describing them as the first major contribution to the hospital’s Orthopedic Department. He also acknowledged the Chief of Defence Staff’s ongoing support and praised the commitment of both senior and junior staff members.
“This donation marks a new chapter for our Orthopedic Department. We are grateful for the support and will ensure these beds are used effectively to improve patient care,” Dr. Nabieu concluded.
The ceremony highlighted the growing partnership between China and Sierra Leone, particularly in the field of healthcare, and reinforced both countries’ commitment to enhancing medical services for the benefit of the armed forces and the wider population.
