On 14th March 2025, Vice President Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh visited Sunbird Bioenergy SL Limited to discuss the company’s expansion plans, which include the construction of a new sugar factory. This initiative is part of the government’s ‘Feed Salone’ program aimed at boosting domestic production of essential goods.

During the visit, Vice President Jalloh engaged with Sunbird’s management to explore the potential impacts of the new project on the local economy. He remarked, “The establishment of a sugar factory aligns with our vision to reduce dependency on imports and increase local production.”

The project is expected to significantly contribute to national food security while stimulating economic growth in the region.

Sunbird Bioenergy, currently employing 1,400 permanent staff and 5,000 seasonal workers, is preparing for further expansion. The new sugar factory is anticipated to create additional job opportunities, helping to alleviate unemployment in Kono and surrounding areas. Jalloh highlighted the importance of sustainable employment in promoting community development.

Furthermore, the discussions also covered Sunbird’s potential contributions to the national power grid. The company is exploring ways to enhance energy production, which could help mitigate ongoing power supply challenges in Sierra Leone. “Increasing our energy capacity is crucial for supporting industrial growth and improving the quality of life for our citizens,” Jalloh added.

The Vice President’s visit underscores the government’s commitment to partnering with the private sector to foster economic development and improve the livelihoods of Sierra Leoneans. With strategic partnerships such as the one between the government and Sunbird Bioenergy, the future of local production and energy sustainability in Sierra Leone looks promising.
