The Minister of Sports, Madam Augusta James Teima, alongside several government officials, attended the first leg of the FIFA World Cup qualifiers second round match between Sierra Leone and Guinea at the Southern Arena in Bo City. The match ended in a 2-2 draw after 90 minutes of intense play.

Following the game, I had the privilege of conducting a special interview with the Minister regarding the outcome. “Although a win was expected, the result was a draw,” the Minister said, acknowledging that in football, there are three possible outcomes: win, draw, or loss.

“It is important to accept the result in good faith. While Sierra Leone’s players gave their best effort, the Guineans also put up a strong performance, and the officiating by the centre referee was commendable. The turnout from football stakeholders and fans was encouraging.”

The Minister of Sports also shared some advice for the players ahead of the return leg in Mali on March 15, 2025. She emphasised the importance of focus, determination, and listening to the head coach’s instructions. “The players should play as a unified team with a clear mind-set,” she admonished.

For the technical team, particularly the head coach, the Minister stressed the need for strategic decision-making, especially when making changes during the match. “Such changes should be aimed at securing victory within the 90 minutes, particularly when playing at home.”

Despite the result on Saturday, Minister Augusta James-Teima expressed full confidence in the team and their ability to perform in the return leg in Mali. “God will see them through,” she added.

She also extended her gratitude to the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) for their efforts in preparing the team and wished them good luck moving forward.

During halftime, Madam Augusta James Teima visited the players in their dressing room to motivate them. She reminded them of the importance of the match, urging them to give their best effort for the country and for the President, who has a deep passion for football.

“Special thanks to the SLFA authorities for their support and preparation. We remain hopeful and confident in the team’s success,” she ended.
