Sierra Leone’s President, Dr. Julius Maada Bio, has been conferred with Liberia’s prestigious ‘Distinguished Service Order’ in recognition of his long-standing military excellence and statesmanship in the region.
The honour was bestowed by Liberian President Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr. during the country’s 68th Armed Forces Day celebration at the Barclay Training Centre in Monrovia on Tuesday, February 11, 2025.
President Bio becomes the first sitting head of state to grace Liberia’s Armed Forces Day as Guest of Honour and Keynote Speaker. In his remarks, President Boakai lauded his Sierra Leonean counterpart for his unwavering commitment to regional peace and international security, describing the award as a testament to President Bio’s distinguished service, which brings immense pride to his nation and reflects positively on the men and women of the Armed Forces of Liberia.
President Boakai also reaffirmed Liberia’s strong bilateral ties with Sierra Leone and assured President Bio of his government’s steadfast support. He called on Liberians, as well as local and international partners, to rally behind the military in sustaining peace and stability in Liberia and across the region.
Delivering his keynote address on the theme, “Sustainable Peace and Security through Stakeholder Engagement: The Role of the Armed Forces,” President Bio underscored the critical role of a professional and disciplined military in upholding national sovereignty and fostering democratic governance. He reminded the troops that history has shown nations thrive when their armed forces uphold democratic principles but falter when the military deviates from them.
“The army is not just a shield against external threats; it is a pillar of democracy,” President Bio stated. “Your commitment to professionalism, respect for human rights, and collaboration with civil institutions will strengthen Liberia’s democracy and serve as an example for the region.”
He urged Liberia’s armed forces to remain steadfast in their duty, stressing that their integrity, patriotism, and dedication to peace will define their legacy. He further encouraged them to uphold their sacred responsibility with honor, knowing that their country, the region, and history will judge them by their commitment to peace, justice, and democracy.
“Comrades, the people of Liberia look to you with trust. The region looks to you with expectation, and history will remember you for your steadfastness in upholding the principles of peace, justice, and democracy,” President Bio concluded.
The ceremony, attended by high-profile dignitaries, marked a historic moment in Sierra Leone-Liberia relations and reaffirmed President Bio’s standing as a key advocate for peace and security in West Africa.
