The Parliament of Sierra Leone has officially on 19th December 2024 in the parliament Building approved the appointment of Chief John Abu as the Resident Minister for the Southern Region. A seasoned journalist, accomplished grassroots politician, and dedicated member of the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), Chief Abu has pledged to serve the people of the South with unwavering commitment and a focus on unity.

The parliamentary session was marked by widespread commendations of Chief Abu’s credentials and his enduring loyalty to the SLPP. Deputy Leader of Parliament, Honorable Bashiru Sidikie, lauded President Julius Maada Bio for appointing a leader deeply rooted in grassroots connections. Hon. Sidikie described Chief Abu as a steadfast SLPP member who understands the aspirations of the southern region’s people and urged him to foster unity and collaboration.

Hon. Keikura Vandy highlighted Chief Abu’s patience and dedication, noting his critical role in President Bio’s electoral victory in 2018. Despite not holding an official position in the years since, Chief Abu’s unwavering support for the party has earned him widespread respect. Hon. Vandy described him as a symbol of loyalty and perseverance, setting an example for others within the SLPP.

Hon. Neneh Lebbie of Bo District praised the appointment, referring to Chief Abu as “a true man of the people.” She encouraged him to maintain strong ties with grassroots communities and collaborate closely with his predecessor, Mohamed E.K. Ali, to ensure continuity and progress in the region.

Hon. Dixon Momoh Rogers from Pujehun District expressed confidence in Chief Abu’s leadership, predicting that his appointment would bolster the SLPP’s chances in the 2028 elections. Hon. Rogers commended Chief Abu’s vision and leadership qualities, describing him as an exemplary figure for the southern region.

In his first public address following his approval, Chief John Abu expressed heartfelt gratitude to President Bio, Parliament, and the people of Sierra Leone. He vowed to promote development, inclusivity, and regional unity across Bo, Pujehun, Bonthe, and Moyamba districts.

Chief Abu brings a wealth of experience to his new role. A former Regent Paramount Chief of Kpanda Kemo Chiefdom in Bonthe District, he holds a Master’s Degree in Rural Development Studies and a Bachelor of Science with Honors in Sociology from Njala University. He currently serves as the Public Relations Officer for the SLPP in Bo District and is the founder of the Empathizers of Maada Bio (EMB), a group that has championed President Bio’s campaigns for over a decade.

Renowned for his leadership and entrepreneurial acumen, Chief Abu reassured citizens of his readiness to serve. “I will not fail the President, Parliament, or the people of Sierra Leone,” he affirmed.

The southern region now looks forward to a period of renewed development and unity under Chief Abu’s leadership.
