In a move to enhance the country’s educational landscape, the Ministry of Technical and Higher Education has announced a series of initiatives aimed at advancing digital and vocational education.
These efforts are geared towards equipping the youths with essential skills to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving job market.
Dr. Haja Ramatulai Wurie, the Minister of Technical and Higher Education revealed that the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) will play a pivotal role in digitizing universities and vocational institutions.
This initiative, set to roll out in early 2025, aims to improve digital competencies across the educational spectrum, ensuring that students are well-prepared for modern challenges.
A key component of this strategy is the expansion of Learning Management Systems (LMS) to incorporate Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).
By enhancing the digital infrastructure, the Ministry seeks to make vocational training more accessible and appealing, particularly to those who may have previously viewed it as a secondary option.
Dr. Wurie emphasized the importance of changing perceptions about TVET, stating that the government remains committed to revamping vocational education to align with labour market needs, showcasing it as a valuable career path. To support this vision, a pilot project will certify skilled individuals, particularly targeting those in the informal sector, with backing from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
Additionally, she mentioned that the ministry has partnered with the National Skills Development Corporation of India to introduce online training programs. These programs will focus on both technical and soft skills, providing graduates with the comprehensive training necessary to excel in various industries.
These advancements come at a crucial time, as the government aims to address youth unemployment and foster economic growth.
By investing in digital and vocational education, the Ministry of Technical and Higher Education is not only preparing students for the workforce but also contributing to the overall development of Sierra Leone’s economy.
With these initiatives, the government reaffirms its commitment to empowering youth and building a skilled workforce that can drive the nation towards a prosperous future.
