His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio has decorated Major General Amara Idara Bangura on his recent appointment as the new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) during a ceremony held at State House, Freetown on Tuesday 26th November 2024..
The announcement comes as Bangura steps into a role that carries significant responsibilities amid evolving security challenges.
In his message, President Bio emphasized the importance of the position, stating that Major General Bangura’s extensive training and experience have equipped him well for the challenges ahead. “The responsibilities ahead of you are significant, but your training has prepared you for this role,” he said.
Major General Bangura brings decades of military experience to the position, having previously served as the Assistant Chief of Defence Staff for Operations and Plans, Chief of Staff at Headquarters Joint Force Command, and Director of Military Operations at the Peace Mission Training Centre. His robust service record highlights a deep understanding of military strategy and operational planning, making him a valuable asset to the RSLAF.
In addition to his military credentials, Bangura is academically accomplished, holding two Master of Arts degrees from King’s College London and a Bachelor of Science from the Institute of Public Administration and Management (IPAM).
This combination of military and academic expertise positions him to effectively address the complex challenges facing Sierra Leone’s defense sector.
In his remarks, President Bio reaffirmed his commitment to support Major General Bangura in his new role. “As your commander-in-chief, I will always be here to support you in advancing professionalism, supporting welfare, and improving capabilities in the RSLAF,” the President stated, underscoring the government’s dedication to strengthening the nation’s armed forces.
This leadership transition comes at a critical time for Sierra Leone, as the government seeks to enhance security and stability.
