The Ministry of Health and the National Public Health Agency (NPHA) confirmed that as of 1:00 PM on August 21, 2024, there are no confirmed cases of Mpox in the country.
This announcement comes amid global concerns regarding the outbreak of the disease, which has prompted increased vigilance and preparedness measures by health authorities.
Professor. Brigadier. Foday Sahr, Executive Director of NPHA, emphasized the agency’s readiness to respond to any potential cases. “We are on high alert and prepared to detect and respond to any potential case of Mpox,” he stated, reassuring the public of their commitment to safeguarding health in the region.
Mpox, previously known as monkeypox, is a rare viral disease that can cause rashes, fever, and other serious symptoms. It is crucial for the public to remain vigilant and report any unusual health conditions. The health authorities urge anyone experiencing a rash (from any part of the body) alongside a history of fever to contact health services immediately by calling 117.
The government is working to enhance public awareness and encourage individuals to seek medical advice promptly to prevent possible transmission. The proactive stance taken by the health agencies aligns with global efforts to contain and manage outbreaks effectively.
As the situation evolves, health officials will continue to provide updates to ensure that citizens are informed and prepared. Authorities are hopeful that swift action and public cooperation will maintain the current status of Mpox in Sierra Leone.
