In a bid to address escalating tensions stemming from a tragic incident, the Independent Commission for Peace and National Cohesion (ICPNC) convened a crucial peace dialogue at its regional office in Port Loko on Wednesday, June 5th, 2024. The dialogue aimed to mend the strained relationship between senior police officers and the executive of the Bike Riders Union, following the fatal shooting of a motorbike rider by a police officer on May 10, 2024.

Led by Larry Johnson, Acting Regional Coordinator of the ICPNC, the meeting underscored the imperative of fostering peace and reinforcing national cohesion amidst such challenging circumstances. Johnson affirmed the Commission’s unwavering commitment to facilitating dialogue among diverse stakeholders, particularly in the aftermath of the tragic incident.

During the dialogue, Alie Badara Tarawallie, City Mayor, provided assurances that the trial of the involved police officer would be conducted locally, urging bike riders to uphold the law and eschew violence. Representing the police force, AIG Manfred Williams emphasized the necessity of maintaining a cordial relationship between law enforcement and bike riders, advocating for continued collaboration.

The discussions concluded with a focus on charting a path forward, emphasizing heightened community and media engagement as essential components of fostering understanding and reconciliation.

In a separate development, Paramount Chief Daniel Hinga Marray and Councilor Morlai Sesay of Mange, who were previously at odds, have reconciled and are now collaborating to serve their community. This reconciliation follows successful mediation efforts by the ICPNC Northwest Regional office several months ago. Both parties expressed gratitude to the Commission for its intervention, signaling a hopeful step towards sustainable peace and cooperation in the region.

Sheku Tejan Saccoh, District Council Chairman, pledged unwavering support for the Commission’s ongoing efforts, reaffirming the commitment of local authorities to advancing peace and unity within their respective communities.

The ICPNC’s proactive measures underscore its vital role in mediating conflicts, fostering dialogue, and promoting reconciliation, crucial elements in building a peaceful and cohesive society.
