In a pivotal presentation at the East China Sea Fisheries Research Institute (ECSFRI), Ambassador Ernest Karim of Sierra Leone highlighted the successful collaboration between China and Sierra Leone in fisheries resource surveys, aimed at enhancing sustainable fisheries management.

Addressing the gathering, Ambassador Karim expressed his gratitude for the partnership, emphasizing its significance for both nations. The collaborative surveys, conducted between April 2019 and June 2021 by Sierra Leonean scientists and ECSFRI, yielded critical data on demersal and pelagic fishery resources. This data is instrumental for scientific management and conservation efforts in Sierra Leone, including the discovery of ten new species.

Ambassador Karim stressed the importance of ongoing monitoring to adapt and refine fisheries management strategies, ensuring the sector’s sustainable development. He also noted the broader context of Sino-Sierra Leone relations, referencing President Julius Maada Bio’s recent state visit to China. During this visit, key discussions on fisheries technology and infrastructure development underscored the mutual commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation.

Looking forward, Ambassador Karim called for continuous collaboration with ECSFRI to conduct comprehensive surveys of Sierra Leone’s principal fish stocks. These surveys will inform rational conservation and management policies essential for the long-term sustainability of the country’s fisheries resources.

In closing, he expressed gratitude for ECSFRI’s partnership and highlighted the necessity of continued support from the Chinese government in developing Sierra Leone’s fisheries sector. Ambassador Karim reiterated the shared responsibility in ensuring sustainable fisheries management for the benefit of both nations.
