On the occasion of Sierra Leone’s 63rd Independence Day celebration, President Julius Maada Bio delivered a comprehensive address to the nation, acknowledging both the milestones achieved and the challenges facing us as a nation. In his speech, President Bio expressed gratitude for the nation’s freedom while highlighting the economic hurdles that continue to impact Sierra Leoneans’ daily lives.
President Bio began by recognizing the sacrifices of Sierra Leone’s forefathers, whose courage and determination secured the nation’s independence. He emphasized the importance of never taking these hard-won freedoms for granted.
Addressing the current economic challenges, President Bio candidly acknowledged the high cost of living, including elevated food prices, fuel costs, and energy shortages. Despite these obstacles, he reassured the nation of his government’s commitment to implementing decisive actions across key sectors to boost economic growth and prosperity.
Specifically, President Bio outlined measures taken to address the high cost of living, including recalibrating fiscal and monetary policies to stabilize the exchange rate and reduce inflation. He reported a significant decrease in inflation from a peak of 55% in October 2023 to 42% as of February 2024, with an expectation of continued improvement.
President Bio also discussed efforts to resolve the ongoing energy crisis, highlighting proactive engagement with partners and stakeholders to ensure stable and reliable electricity supply. He emphasized investments in energy subsidies and the advancement of an Energy Mix Strategy aiming for 75% renewable energy by bolstering domestic production and international partnerships.
Furthermore, President Bio detailed the flagship FEED SALONE Programme, designed to achieve food self-sufficiency and sustainable economic growth. The program includes substantial investments in agriculture, particularly rice production, and introduces new financial instruments like Crop Insurance and Credit Facilities targeting women and youth.
Acknowledging the scourge of drugs and substance abuse, President Bio declared a National Emergency and established a task force to combat the issue, calling for collective action from communities, traditional leaders, families, and youth.
In addressing the socio-economic impact on vulnerable groups, President Bio highlighted the implementation of social safety net programs, including cash transfers and labor-intensive projects to create employment opportunities for youth.
President Bio underscored the importance of international partnerships for economic development, citing the necessity of both internal and external investments. He emphasized the purpose of his overseas travels to secure investments crucial for national development.
In conclusion, President Bio reiterated his commitment to upholding democracy, peace, and freedom, emphasizing the need for vigilance against threats to national security and the preservation of universal rights for all citizens.
