In a recent address at the National Sports Authority (NSA) headquarters, newly appointed Executive Director, Dr. Emmanuel Saffa Abdulai, laid out a clear directive: sporting associations must prioritize national competitions to receive support from the NSA.
Dr. Abdulai, welcoming international fighters at the Sierra Leone Boxing Association’s presentation, expressed his vision for a more inclusive and diversified sports landscape in Sierra Leone. He stressed the importance of broadening the scope beyond football, advocating for sports in schools and colleges.
“Our new agenda at the NSA is to build capacity for our coaches,” Dr. Abdulai stated, highlighting the need for sustainable support for sporting associations, as the government faces numerous financial demands.
Responding to concerns about high performance, Dr. Abdulai emphasized the necessity for athletes to compete and excel across various sports. He underscored the dual nature of sports, describing it as both entertainment and empowerment.
With a focus on leveraging sports for tourism, Dr. Abdulai outlined plans to create a sports basket to complement government financial commitments. He urged sports associations to demonstrate seriousness and accountability in their endeavors.
Looking ahead, Dr. Abdulai emphasized the importance of nurturing top-level athletes to reach their full potential, signaling a commitment to fostering excellence within Sierra Leone’s sports community.
The NSA’s new direction under Dr. Abdulai’s leadership signals a concerted effort to prioritize national competitions, build capacity, and promote a diverse sports culture, aligning with broader national goals of empowerment and economic development through sports.
