In a recent District stakeholders meeting held at the Fillie Faboe memorial hall on April 12th, 2024, his lordship Komba Matthew Sam, the mayor of Koidu New Sembehun City Council, proclaimed Koidu as the safest place in Kono District. The meeting aimed to address concerns over alleged underground mining operations by Koidu Limited, triggered by social media discussions.
Mayor Sam dismissed the allegations as baseless and unfounded, emphasizing his commitment to the safety of Koidu residents, including his own family. He asserted that mining operations in the area are conducted in accordance with policies and laws, promising repercussions for any violations by mining companies.
Acknowledging the restraint shown by the youth in response to rumored strike actions against Koidu Limited, Mayor Sam assured residents of a mature and responsive leadership. However, he condemned the spread of rumors regarding the company’s mining activities.
In support of Mayor Sam’s stance, honorable Musa Fofanah, a member of Parliament, vowed not to compromise the development of Kono District. He proposed the formation of a committee dedicated to the district’s advancement and protection of its reputation.
Acting manager of Koidu Limited, Miles Van Eeden, refuted claims of undermining Koidu City, stating that such accusations were false. He assured the public that the company’s operations are conducted within its concession boundaries and would not harm the municipality or Kono District.
The stakeholders’ meeting, initiated by Paramount Chief Paul G Saquee, brought together various community leaders, parliamentarians, civil society activists, and the media. Paramount Chief of Tankoro Chiefdom emphasized the need to clarify misinformation and denounced efforts to disrupt peace in the district, particularly by those abroad financing strike actions against Koidu Limited.
In summary, the meeting aimed to address concerns regarding alleged mining activities and ensure the peace and development of Kono District, affirming the commitment of local leaders to safeguarding community interests.
