In a significant move towards bolstering President Bio’s Big Five Projects, the National Social Security and Insurance Trust (NASSIT) welcomed COVEC West Africa Limited, a prominent Chinese Construction and Engineering Company, on Wednesday, 3rd April 2024. The partnership aims at the construction of an ultra-modern medical facility and student hostels across five university campuses in Sierra Leone.
Mohamed Fuaad Daboh, the Director General of NASSIT, underscored the trust’s commitment to contributing to the government’s flagship initiatives, despite its primary role in administering Sierra Leone’s National Pension Scheme. Daboh expressed enthusiasm for establishing partnerships, highlighting the meeting as a crucial step in realizing their objectives.
Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to China, Dr. Abu Bakarr Karim, lauded the meeting as a pivotal moment in strengthening bilateral ties between Sierra Leone and China. He emphasized the importance of President Bio’s Big Five Projects for national development and assured COVEC West Africa Limited of the government’s dedication to fostering a conducive investment environment.
Ma Aiging, Deputy Managing Director of COVEC West Africa, introduced the company as a subsidiary of China Railway Group Limited, a renowned entity in engineering and design. Aiging highlighted COVEC’s global stature and extensive experience in international project contracting, including operations in Africa.
Expressing readiness to collaborate with NASSIT, Aiging outlined COVEC’s interest in various investment opportunities in Sierra Leone, particularly in the construction sector. Mohammed Gondoe, NASSIT’s Deputy Director General responsible for Administration, Finance, and Investment, reiterated the trust’s commitment to investing in critical sectors such as health and tourism.
The discussions revolved around investment needs, funding mechanisms, project design, construction plans, and operational strategies. Both parties agreed to adhere to predetermined timelines and demonstrate unwavering commitment to the project’s success.
The collaboration between NASSIT and COVEC West Africa Limited signifies a significant step towards advancing healthcare infrastructure and educational facilities in Sierra Leone, aligning with the government’s developmental agenda.
