Dr. Kabba warned of the high risks associated with kidney failure, including the need for costly dialysis treatments and susceptibility to infectious diseases.
Furthermore, Dr. Kabba addressed preventable causes of kidney diseases, including the unrestricted use of certain medications. He emphasized the importance of medical supervision when taking drugs and announced efforts in Sierra Leone to expand access to kidney specialists and enhance kidney care services in government hospitals.
Dr. Joshua Coker, a Kidney Specialist and Nephrology Consultant at Connaught Hospital, echoed Dr. Kabba’s concerns, citing common causes of kidney disease such as high blood pressure, diabetes, chronic infections, and HIV. Dr. Coker emphasized the necessity of regular check-ups, proper hydration, and dietary precautions to protect kidney health.
Additionally, G. Varadharajan, Raj Country Manager, highlighted the significance of regular blood and fluid tests in maintaining kidney function. The presentations collectively emphasized the urgent need for increased awareness and accessibility to dialysis care to address the growing burden of kidney disease in Sierra Leone.
