At the EU/UN Survivors Town Hall held in New York, Sierra Leone’s Minister of Information and Civic Education, Chernor Bah, highlighted the nation’s robust efforts in combatting rape and sexual violence. Under the theme ‘Celebration of Survivors Resilience at CSW68′, Bah showcased Sierra Leone’s proactive stance towards addressing these critical issues.
Minister Bah emphasized Sierra Leone’s instrumental role in co-sponsoring and co-leading efforts at the United Nations to adopt a resolution recognizing the rights of violence survivors to healing and justice. He commended the country’s boldness, vocal advocacy, and concrete actions in this regard.
A significant step in Sierra Leone’s fight against rape and sexual violence came in 2019 when President Julius Maada Bio declared rape a National Emergency. Minister Bah recounted President Bio’s extraordinary measures, including the revision of rape laws and expediting survivors’ cases, demonstrating a commitment to tangible solutions.
Furthermore, Bah outlined ongoing initiatives, including the involvement of the First Lady, Madam Fatima Bio, in championing the cause. He stressed the government’s dedication to addressing underlying issues alongside present challenges, despite limited resources.
In a startling revelation, Minister Bah disclosed the establishment of Free Quality Education for primary and secondary schools, with additional provisions for free tuition in STEM courses at the university level, ensuring girls’ access to education without hindrance.
In conclusion, Minister Chernor Bah reiterated Sierra Leone’s commitment to action beyond mere legislative reforms. As a feminist and champion for women’s rights, he pledged to advocate for the Spotlight Initiative upon his return to Sierra Leone, emphasizing a holistic approach to combating rape and sexual violence.
