The Sierra Leone Police force, led by Regional Police Commander South, Assistant Inspector General of Police Mr. Brima Kanneh, along with the head of the Complaint Discipline and Internal Investigation Department (CDIID), has announced robust measures aimed at restoring discipline and professionalism within its ranks. This decision was disclosed during a muster parade convened on Wednesday, March 13th, 2024, underlining the critical importance of upholding law and order, ensuring citizen safety, and safeguarding the integrity of the Police force.
In his address to the personnel, Regional Commander AIG Kanneh reiterated the concerns articulated by Inspector General of Police Mr. William Fayia Sellu, stressing the imperative of establishing clear expectations for conduct and performance, instituting transparent mechanisms for addressing misconduct, and holding officers accountable for their behavior. Key initiatives encompass regular lectures on ethics and professionalism, thorough investigations into misconduct allegations, and the imposition of appropriate sanctions for breaches of the code of conduct.
IGP Sellu underscored the pivotal role of fostering a culture of accountability and transparency within the force, urging officers to report infractions while assuring protection from reprisals, thereby promoting discipline and accountability. The Sierra Leone Police is steadfast in its commitment to rebuilding trust and garnering respect from the community, thereby effectively discharging its mandate to serve and safeguard.
Highlighting the necessity of strict adherence to regulations and codes of conduct within the Police force, IGP Sellu emphasized, “Compliance with established protocols is non-negotiable from 2024 onwards,” underscoring the imperative of maintaining order, adhering to procedures, and upholding ethical standards to ensure the lawful functioning of the department.
CDIID Coordinator Superintendent Abdulai D. Bangura delineated their proactive approach to discipline, which entails holding officers answerable for their actions and conduct, and promptly addressing any instances of misconduct or policy transgressions.
