32-year-old Ishmeal Sheriff made his first appearance before Magistrate Sahr Kekura of Padempa Road Court No.1 in Freetown on two count charges: Conspiracy to Defraud contrary to Law, and Causing money to be paid to another by means of fraud contrary to section 32(2) of the Larceny Act 1916.
According to the particulars of the offense, on Saturday, 10th February 2024, at No.74 Sir Samuel Lewis Road, Freetown, Ishmeal Sheriff conspired with unknown persons to defraud Hawa Ruth Rogers by inducing her to pay NLe 30,000 to a landlord by the name of Patrick Tunde Williams, purportedly for a house at the said address, knowing the claim to be false.
When the charges were read and explained to the accused person, no plea was taken. The prosecutor, Assistant Superintendent of Police Ibrahim S. Mansaray, sought a short adjournment date to confer properly with his witnesses.
Meanwhile, Magistrate Kekura refused bail and remanded the accused person to the male correctional facility in Freetown. The matter was adjourned to the 7th March 2024 for further hearing.
