The Director of the National Democratic Institution (NDI) Mohamed I. Konneh has on 29th February 2024, emphasized the importance of women’s participation in top political parties during the One Day National Consultative Conference held at the Civil Service Training College on State Avenue, Tower Hill, Freetown.

Konneh stressed the necessity for women to have a voice in political matters within their respective parties. He revealed that while there is currently 30% female representation in political parties, there is a desire to increase this number. He highlighted the achievement of reaching 30% representation in parliament and local councils but noted that there’s still work to be done within political parties themselves to ensure women’s leadership roles.

He acknowledged that some parties have made commitments to promote women’s participation, but there are challenges in actualizing these commitments, particularly in the reluctance of some parties to provide leadership roles to women. Konneh outlined the need for internal party elections to reflect the inclusion of women in various positions within the government.

Abdul Martin, the Program Manager of the Men’s Association for Gender Equality (MAGE), stated that efforts are being made by men to support women’s involvement in political parties. He recognized the prevailing gender norms that hinder women’s leadership but expressed determination to address these issues, particularly in Kambia and Koinadugu Councils.

Martin emphasized the importance of engaging men and boys to recognize women as equal partners in political participation, highlighting that women’s inclusion is essential for the success of political parties. He advocated for increased representation of women in decision-making positions within parties.

Ibrahim Sallieu Turay, a member of the APC, endorsed the notion of granting women equal rights and opportunities to participate in the government, affirming that women are capable leaders.

Princess Conteh, a member of the CDP, shared her personal benefits from the program, expressing newfound self-confidence and a commitment to advocating for women’s rights within her party. She pledged to educate other party members on the importance of women holding higher positions in government.
