The Chinese Embassy in Sierra Leone hosted a reception party on February 11, 2024, to celebrate the Chinese New Year on behalf of the People’s Republic of China. The event was attended by notable figures including the Minister of Tourism and Culture, Mrs. Nabella F Tunis, Honorable Mr. Muana Brima Massaquoi, Deputy Minister of Defense, representatives from Sierra Leone-China Friendship Organizations, and members of the press.
During his opening speech, the Chinese Ambassador to Sierra Leone, Mr. Wang Qing, conveyed sincere greetings and Chinese New Year wishes to all attendees and compatriots in Sierra Leone. He expressed gratitude to friends from various backgrounds who have supported the development of China and China-Sierra Leone relations.
Ambassador Wang Qing highlighted the significance of the Spring Festival as a time for family reunion, friendship celebration, and reflection on the past and future. He noted China’s achievements in managing the COVID-19 pandemic and sustaining economic recovery, with the country’s GDP exceeding 126 trillion yuan, marking a 5.2% year-on-year increase. Additionally, China’s contribution to global economic growth remained significant at 32%.
The Ambassador emphasized China’s commitment to global cooperation and highlighted various successful events such as the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation and international sporting events. He also noted the fruitful cooperation between China and Sierra Leone in education, health, agriculture, infrastructure, and military exchanges, including aid deliveries and scholarships.
In reference to the Lunar New Year being the Year of the Dragon, Ambassador Wang Qing described the dragon as a symbol of strength, courage, and vitality in Chinese culture. He reiterated China’s dedication to high-quality development, opening up, and building a community with a shared future for mankind.
Ambassador Wang Qing encouraged Chinese compatriots in Sierra Leone to continue playing a constructive role in enhancing China-Sierra Leone economic cooperation and promoting friendship between the two countries. He concluded by wishing prosperity and happiness for China, stability and sustainability for China-Sierra Leone relations, and good health, happiness, and success for all guests in the Year of the Dragon.
