In a bid to extend university education in Sierra Leone, the Minister of Technical and Higher Education, Dr. Ramatulai Wurie, held a press conference at the Ministry of Technical and Higher Education where she revealed that lectures have commenced at Kono University.

She explained that the ongoing programs currently offered at the university are Mining Engineering, Computer Science, Environmental Science, and Agricultural Science. Dr. Wurie added that there are currently 158 students enrolled in these courses, and the government is utilizing existing resources and infrastructure until the construction of Kono University is completed.

Dr. Wurie emphasized that Kono University is a priority for His Excellency, President Rtd Brigadier Julius Maada Bio, and they have worked tirelessly to make it a reality. She mentioned that the university’s theme is centered around Science and Technology, reflecting the courses offered.

The Minister stated that lectures resumed on January 5th after completing all administrative processes. She noted that lecturers were mainly recruited within the environmental disciplines, aligning with the university’s focus on the Big Five to support national development.

Addressing ongoing issues regarding the appointment of the Vice Chancellor and Principal and the dissolution of the University Court (USL), Dr. Wurie explained that the decision to appoint an Acting Vice Chancellor and Principal was made in good faith to fill an existing vacuum. This decision followed consultations with university stakeholders and advice from the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC).

Dr. Wurie clarified that the dissolution of the University Court was advised by TEC due to its ineffectiveness and deviation from its mandate. She mentioned that Professor Lawrence Kamara, the appointed acting Vice Chancellor and Principal, has resigned, and an oversight committee has been established as recommended by TEC to serve in the interim.

Regarding the Sierra Leone Grant-in-aid, Dr. Wurie announced that the list would be published, benefiting over 3,000 students. She mentioned that components of the grant would be reserved for female STEM students, Persons with Disabilities, and children of teachers. Additionally, she updated the public on the gradual rollout of the Students Loan Scheme, encouraging both private and public investments to ensure its sustainability.
