Former Sierra Leone Aquatics Federation Coach Bobson Mansaray continues to excel in Australia as an International Swimming Coach. In 2010, he had the incredible opportunity to work as a swimming coach at the prestigious British Swim Club in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, gaining valuable insights into the sport while working with some of the world’s best swimmers.
Following his outstanding performance abroad, Dr. Faludin invited him back to Sierra Leone to help set up a swimming team. Without hesitation, Bobson left the UAE in late 2009, meeting with Dr. Faludin and other swimming association members upon his return.
Accepting the offer to become a voluntary swimming coach under the National Swimming, he faced numerous challenges, including a lack of proper infrastructure and funding. Undeterred, Bobson used his funds to clear and fill the swimming pool, going to schools to raise awareness about the importance of swimming.
During his school visits, including the Free Town Aniwalsh Schools, Bobson recruited talents like Binturabi Jalloh, who later represented Sierra Leone in international events such as the All-African Games, FINA World Championships, Commonwealth Games, and the Olympic Games. Several other swimmers he trained also found success in countries like Australia, Germany, Canada, and France. In 2009, the swimming team secured third place in the West African Games in Senegal.
Recognizing Bobson’s hard work and dedication, the National Olympic Committee awarded him a scholarship to attend the International Coaching Enrichment program at the University of Delaware in the U.S.A. and the U.S. Olympic Committee and Switzerland at the University of Lausanne in 2016. He continued to serve as the coach for the national swimming team until leaving the country, and currently works as the Head Coach at the Huntingtower Swimming Club in Australia.
In his coaching journey, Bobson learned that determination, hard work, and a passion for the sport can make anything possible. His experiences allowed him to travel the world, work with talented athletes, and contribute significantly to developing swimming in Sierra Leone.
As of 2024, Bobson proudly announced that 12 swimmers have qualified for the 2024 Victorian Sprint Championships, where the team reached three finals, securing one silver and two gold medals. The journey continues, and Bobson remains grateful for the opportunity to serve his country and impact the lives of many through the sport of swimming.
