It appears that there are ongoing tensions and protests in the Sierra Rutile mining area in Impere chiefdom, Bonthe District. The aggrieved youths have set up roadblocks, disrupting the operations of Sierra Rutile mining company and its subcontracted companies. The protest is fueled by the belief that these companies, especially the subcontracted ones like Mano Mining Company, are not adequately employing local residents despite their capabilities.

According to reports, the protesters accuse the mining companies, particularly Mano Mining Company, of favoring non-indigenous individuals over locals in the recruitment process. They claim that their job applications have been consistently rejected in favor of non-indigenous people, leading to widespread frustration among the youth in the area.

The protest specifically targets Mano Mining Company, which the protesters label as notorious for marginalizing local residents during job recruitment. The aggrieved youths are calling for the replacement of Human Resource managers, as well as the safety officer, whom they believe are responsible for the alleged unfair hiring practices.

Efforts by local stakeholders, including the councilor covering the mining area, have been made to address the situation and find a resolution. While partial normalcy has returned to the mining area, the roadblocks have temporarily halted the operations of Sierra Rutile mining company.

It is important to note that there have been no reported human casualties or major damages to property during the protests. However, the situation remains tense, and the resolution of the issue is still underway. Attempts to contact company officials for their perspective on the matter have been unsuccessful so far.

The development in this mining area underscores the challenges and tensions that can arise in communities where there is perceived inequality in job opportunities, especially when it comes to major economic activities such as mining. Local authorities and company officials may need to engage in constructive dialogue to address the concerns of the aggrieved youths and find a mutually beneficial solution to the ongoing issues.
