Market Women Vital In Sierra Leone’s Fight Against Corruption-Says ACC

On January 25, 2024, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) engaged the Kroo-Town Road Market Women, a part of the informal sector, to discuss anti-corruption issues. Abdulai Bah, the Chairman of the Kroo-Town Road Market Area, expressed gratitude for the ACC’s efforts in combating corruption in Sierra Leone. He highlighted the recent recovery of Eight Billion, Six Hundred Million Old Leones (Le8.6BN) from corrupt individuals.

Al-Hassay Sesay, the Head of the External Outreach Unit at ACC, provided an overview of the Commission’s work. He emphasized recent achievements, including recoveries from the Ministry of Finance, Sierra Leone Roads Authority (SLRA), and issues involving Hon. Umar Paran Tarawally and his wife. Sesay encouraged the market women to join the ACC in the fight against corruption, assuring whistleblowers of handsome rewards.

Alhaji A.K. Bangura, the Senior Communications Officer, explained that the ACC aimed to take the fight against corruption to challenging places and sought the support of the people, particularly in the informal sector. He highlighted the Commission’s increased focus on market women, acknowledging that they may not be well-informed about the ACC’s work and the impact of corruption on their welfare.

Shaika Kamara, the Public Education Officer at ACC, spoke about the role of market women in combating corruption. He urged them to ensure the products they sell are genuine and of the correct quality, addressing concerns about the adulteration of palm and vegetable oil. Kamara emphasized the influential role of market women in creating job opportunities for youth and providing food security.

Martina George, another Communications Officer at ACC, explained the methods of reporting suspected acts of corruption to the market women. She stressed the collaborative nature of the fight against corruption, stating that collective efforts yield progress and results.

To conclude the engagement, Al-Hassan Sesay, on behalf of the Commission, presented ACC-IEC materials to the market women, reinforcing the importance of their involvement in the anti-corruption efforts.Top of Form
