With the support of the German Ministry of Development and Cooperation (BMZ) and the European Union, GIZ, in collaboration with Orange Sierra, successfully concluded a two-month rapid skills development training under the Empowerment Promotion Project (EPP4) in Kono District.
The rapid skills development training, implemented by Orange Sierra Leone and GIZ, targeted two hundred young people in Kono District, providing them with a two-month free Information Communication Technology (ICT) training at the NICOB Technical Vocational Institute in Sukudu new site, Tankoro chiefdom, Koidu City, Kono District.
The Empowerment Promotion Project’s (EPP4) two-month rapid skills development training culminated in a graduation and certification ceremony at Fillie Faboi Memorial Hall in Koidu City.
In his statement, Sahr O Fallah, the Chairman of Kono District Youth Council, emphasized the significance of the acquired skills, urging the graduates to use their knowledge wisely for positive change in the district and the country. Fallah stressed that graduation marks a transformation in character, capacity, behavioral life, and mindset, making individuals service providers in their communities.
He acknowledged the positive impact of GIZ and Orange Sierra Leone projects on youth nationwide, urging continued support for current and future leaders (youths) in Sierra Leone and beyond.
To the graduates, Fallah advised them to demonstrate that they have acquired the right knowledge and encouraged them to pursue further training. Aiah Francis Fanday, the Marketing Head of Orange Sierra Leone Kono Office, explained that the free computer fundamental training aimed to equip young Sierra Leoneans with the skills needed in the increasingly digitalized world. Fanday emphasized that this knowledge would open doors to job opportunities and contribute to the country’s digital advancement.
Ferand James, the District Coordinator of GIZ EEP Kono office, highlighted GIZ’s history of implementing rapid skills training projects in the district. He emphasized that the acquired certificate, knowledge, and skills would make the graduates employable in today’s digital world, potentially leading to job creation.
James mentioned that the co-funded EPP project by BMZ and EU would conclude in April 2024, with the possibility of a new project emerging with a different name and objective.
Ishmael Kabba, the Director of NICOB Technical and Vocational Institute (Sukudu Computer Centre) and tutor during the two-month training, described the journey as challenging, dealing with diverse learning paces and prior knowledge gaps among trainees. He emphasized the institute’s training pedagogy, combining theoretical and practical aspects of computer skills through weekly assessments.
Graduates Mariama Bah and Komba Konomanyi expressed gratitude to their benefactors for the opportunity and encouraged continued support.
