Reports say the ineffectiveness of the traffic department at the Tankoro Police Divisional Headquarters Koidu city – Kono District could be one of the causes that account for the spate of road accidents in the municipality of Koidu.
According to the report, the traffic police are doing little or nothing to execute their responsibilities as police, rather they are head bent at allegedly taking bribes from riders and drivers who are in default of the law.
In response to the allegations, the District Traffic Officer attached to the aforementioned police station, Alhaji Mustapha Senessie said, the allegations made by people are certainly not true. He also denied knowledge that his men are not doing their work.
He further stated that everyone has a role to play in order to reduce the accident rate in the municipality of Koidu. He pointed at excessive drugs taking, over speeding, and disregard of traffic rules by road users. He made particular mention of rampant defective vehicles as part of the causations of road accidents.
He therefore called on all citizens to join forces with the SLP to reduce the accident rate in Koidu city and the District as a whole.
He disclosed that their duty is to protect lives and properties and they will make sure they work towards that public expectations.
