In his farewell message to the fifth batch of the Formed Police Unit (FPU-5), who left the shores of the country on Sunday 1st October, 2023 for the African Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mr. William Fayia Sellu, called on them to demonstrate what they have learnt in the past one year at the war theatre in Somalia.
According to the IGP, the FPU-5 was rated by UN/AU assessment as the best that they have ever assessed.
“That mean you have been rated high, to whom much is given, much is expected” IGP Sellu said.
In Somalia, the Police Chief informed that SL FPU is standing very clearly as a very hard working and dedicated team.
The SL FPU he said is the only contingent that can boast of first class top notch servants.
FPU-5 he went on to say were kept together for a year and during the period, they were used for public order response in some parts of the country.
He applauded the women for their endurance and informed them that they are going to represent four things, their individual name, family name, the name of the institution and the country, “We won’t stand and allow you to bring all these into disrepute” the Police Chief asserted.
The Chief Executive Officer added that they are not going there as an individual but as a contingent, a contingent of a country which is rated very high.
He furthered that they chose the SLP as a career job for a life time and that some are very young, he therefore encouraged them to have a clear vision as they go out there.
For those that are young, he said can run after Okada and arrest it but five years down the road, they would not have that energy, so they should think now.
He also encouraged them not to keep far off from their families, pointing out instances where families fall apart because one person becomes financially buoyant.
IGP emphasizes that they are in constant touch with the contingent commander whom he said is under obligation to update them on misconduct or any form of misbehavior.
He warned against, sneaking out for privacy, stating that their safety depend on themselves, urging them to be watchful, know and adapt to their environment but more especially to work as a team.
Director of Operations Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Brima Jah Esq, called on them to maintain discipline and not work in isolation.
Other speakers includes Director of Corporate Affairs, AIG Memunatu Konteh Jalloh, Director of Professional Standards, AIG Sahr Y Senesi and Director of Crime Services, Commissioner of Police (CP) Joseph Lahai
