In a splendid and unprecedented regional inauguration ceremony, the North-East Football Association (NERFA) inaugurated its Division One playoffs. The inauguration took place in Magburaka on 28th August 2023, where Golden Dragons FC graciously hosted Puna FC at the Magburaka field.
Distinguished dignitaries in attendance included NERFA’s Secretary General, Sheku Bilo Conteh, who also had the privilege of making the official kickoff. Alongside him were notable figures such as Abdul Pascal Gbla, Vice Chairman of NERFA, the Chairman of the Bombali District Football Association (BDFA), Sulaiman Sillah Sesay, Mohamed Milton Koroma, Head of Competitions at NERFA, and numerous other prominent personalities from the football realm, all contributing to the event’s grandeur.
The initial half of the match unfolded with intense competition, as the host held sway over the opportunities, leaving Puna FC, the 2023 FA Cup champions of Koinadugu district, with limited chances. However, the pivotal juncture arrived in the 40th minute, marked by an extraordinary individual effort from defender Morlai Kamara, who executed a stunning solo strike that left the Koinaduguans, the visiting team, in awe. Kamara, hailed as the standout performer for Tonkolili’s most celebrated team, rightfully clinched the title of Man of the Match in recognition of his remarkable contribution.
The latter half sustained the same elevated level of intensity, with debutant from Kabala introducing multiple changes in their pursuit to even the scoreline. Unfortunately, their endeavors bore no fruit, despite an enhanced performance compared to the initial half.
Golden Dragons now lead Group ‘A’ after completing one match, securing three points. As former contenders in the Sierra Leone Premier League, Golden Dragons, fueled by their aspirations, aim to leverage this playoff opportunity, seeking qualification to the nation’s top-tier league for the first time in over a decade, thus rekindling their competitive legacy.
