The Sierra Leone Teqball Federation has over the weekend taken game to the province, Masiaka Town where teams from the Regions where part of the National Championship.
The Tournament started earlier this month in Freetown. Masiaka won the first edition and the second series this time took place in Masiaka town Koya chiefdom and they defeated Western Teqball by 2-1 sets.
In two day events, with so many surprises as the defending Champion Koya Teq maintain the winning runs and they defeated Western Teq by two one (2-1) and Calaba Teq from the Western Area won the mixed double final. Also, Nongowa Teq from Kenema won the singles finals.
The Chief Organizer, Unisa Deen Kargbo said the aim of the Federation is to take the game of Teqball across the four corners of the country to see that the sport be amongst the sporting disciplines in the country. He affirmed that those from the Western Area Teq who walked away while the final match was playing will be penalized and they are not going to be part of the third series in Kenema.
The Vice president of the National Olympic Committee of Sierra Leone in the person of Alhaji Abdulai Karim Sesay who served as the guest of honor started by expressing his appreciation to the organizers who made make it possible to take the game of Teqball to that part of the Country. He disclosed intention of taking the game of Teqball to Kono and Kailahun to see that the sport is played across the Country.
According to the head coach of the Western Area Mohamed Bangura they lost to the host Koya due to home advantage because they won the first set, but lost the last matches.
He said they were subjected to distraction and poor officiating from the technical team.
For the head coach of the defending Champion, Mohamed Ali Turay “it is always the cry of the opponents who lose but as a team we followed the rules and regulations that is why we were able to maintain their trophy.”
Mabinty Kamara the Officiating Referees said she was happy to have officiated the Teqball matches and said she acquired the Knowledge to officiate Teqball through an online course she did and this has helped her greatly. She admonished that the actions of the Western Area Teq to walk out from the game in a spirit of good sportsmanship behavior.
Brief summary of the results:
In men’s double Western Area lost to the host Koya by two one (2-1) after four game played, as Koya won Gold medals.
In men single the second position went to Nongowa from Kenema as they won the single final by (12-9) and Sonnie Kanneh was the winner after defeating Ibrahim from Masasabana.
In the men’s Mix double finals Calaba Teq won by two straight set as Kadiatu Kamara and Momoh Kelfa emerged Champion.
The next edition of Teqball National Championship tournament will continue in the Eastern Province of Sierra Leone the date will be communicated to the various clubs.
