Executive Members of the Sierra Leone Boxing Association (SLBA) on Monday 27th March 2023 presented one (1) silver medal and a certificate won by Abu Bakar Bakish Kanu in the AFBC Zone 2, 60kg Lightweights Championship in Dakar, Senegal, to the Ministry of Sports, received by the Minister of Sports, IbrahimNyelenkeh as accolade and laurel to Sierra Leone.
Haroun Korjie, Director of Sports, and Morrison Gboyor, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Sports welcome the delegation and expressed their gratitude to the SLBA for upholding discipline at the highest peak.
Presenting the medal and certificate, Alhaji Komba, Secretary General, SLBA thanked and appreciated the Ministry of Sports especially Minister Ibrahim Nyelenkeh for his astute leadership and support to the association. He also pleaded with the Ministry to ensure approval of allocations and funds to SLBA to enable them to participate in other championships eminent in due course.
“We exhibited our best performance by winning a silver medal but we were constrained financially as our allocation has not been approved. It was also challenging for us during the tournament but we excelled, we are thankful to NoC for providing one ticket that ensured our participation and here we are with a silver medal’ Komba added.
Minister of Sports, Ibrahim Nyelenkeh thanked the entire team on behalf of President Dr.JuliusMaada Bio and the people of Sierra Leone. He also described the performance of Abu Bakar Bakish Kanu as a service to the nation. ‘Bringing laurel back home makes me proud and thankful. Your performance and achievement can be considered as phenomenal service to the nation”, Minister Nyelenkeh added.
He further expressed the government’s willingness and President Bio’s commitment to ensuring that all sporting activities and discipline are fully supported. “When someone is determined to perform, no matter what the circumstances he will excel. I will ensure I present your performance in my next cabinet meeting”, he assured.
Abu Bakar Bakish Kanu was thankful to God for this success, and thanked the Ministry of Sports for their support, promising many more laurels in upcoming competitions.
