As a way of informing the public about its level of preparedness in the upcoming multi-tier electioneering process, the electoral commission of Sierra Leone (ECSL) has engaged stakeholders in Pujehun district on the much talked about proportional representation system.
Addressing the audience at Deleh Hall Growth Center in Pujehun, the Southern Region Electoral Commissioner Edward Alpha thanked everyone for gracing the event.
He said the engagement is geared towards providing the public with adequate information and understanding on the PR system which the commission would be using to conduct the 2023 multitier elections.
Commissioner Alpha pointed out that the proportional representation system is not a new practice in the country as it was used in 1996, 2002 and now they are using it for this year’s elections.
He further admonished stakeholders present to cascade the knowledge gained to their subject in order to actualize a peaceful free and fair elections come June this year. The district Public Affairs Secretary Sierra Leone People’s Party Pujehun Alpha Kamara described the engagement as timely as for some people they are first time voters and they know nothing about what the PR system entails. He however pleaded with ECSL to do more of such similar community engagements. Mr. Kamara promised ECSL and others present that he will do all in his powers to take the message to his memberships in order to avoid void votes in the upcoming electioneering process. On his part the District Secretary General Pujehun of the All-People’s Congress Party Dennis Swaray on behalf of his party registered their support towards the said process and further pleaded with the commission to continue the engagement with members of the public about the PR System of elections.
