The newly elected Publicity Secretary of the All People’s Congress party, has made a clarion call on APCians to desist from rushing the flag bearer to select his running mate amongst the lot that have emerged for the running mate position.
According to Tunis, Dr. Samura has to be given space and chance to meditate carefully over his selection of the one that is fit to be his running mate. ” The man has just been elected and besides has a corruption case hanging over his head”, Tunis lamented, adding that the selection of running mate squarely lies on the flag bearer and not party members who may have names they are in support of the position of Running Mate ahead of June 24 Polls. He described their flag bearer as no stranger in the politics of the country which he had served in various capacities as Civil Servant and politician which he said means that Dr. Samura knows exactly who to appoint as his Running Mate to face President Julius Maada Bio of the ruling SLPP who has chosen his Vice President to be his Running Mate like in 2018 when he won the polls together with Juldeh Jalloh.
Sources within the APC party indicate that Samura Kamara is taking into consideration region, religion and gender into consideration for choosing his Running Mate this time not like before when Hon. Chernor Bah was hand picked by former President Ernest Bai Koroma for Samura Kamara. “Aki-Sawyerr would have been a good choice if she had been a Muslim by religion because we have women empowerment as part of the political agenda for this election”, a die hard supporter of Samura informed this press. Another supporter in the Western Rural District said Chernor Bah should be given a second chance to enter the race with Samura Kamara having served his party well over the years as Minority Leader in Parliament.
However, the Democratic process applied by the APC to elect rather than to select their officials has been commended by the Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Chernor Abass Bundu saying the party used Democratic process for the first time after a long time.
In another development, Tunis has called on the Sierra Leone Police to provide a level play field for all political parties contesting in the multi-tier election in terms of security. He said the police should not reduce themselves to being operatives of the ruling political party against other registered political parties.
