The matter of the Mayor of Freetown City Council, Yvonne Aki Sawyer which was supposed to be heard yesterday has suffered serious setback, leaving the Bench with no option but to adjourn.

Mayor Aki Sawyer was investigated and charge to court for obstruction of Police Duty contrary to section 39 of the Police Act, 1964, Act No. 7, and Disorderly Behaviour contrary to Section 12(b) of the Public Order Act of 1965 as repealed and replaced by the Public Order (Amendment) (No. 2) Act No. 15 of 1973.

It was stated on the police charge sheet it that on Saturday 17th September, 2022 at the Airport Police Division in Lungi, Kaffu Bullom Chiefdom, Port Loko District, Mayor Aki Sawyer obstructed Detective Sergeant 7966, Richard Junior Caulker and Corporal 12225 Fanta Fofanah while executing their lawful duties.

Mayor Yvonne Aki Sawyer`s, defense team are expected to continue defending their client on the allegation levied against her by the police.

Shortly after the matter was mentioned by state counsel Yusif Issac Sesay for further hearing, the defense teams were not in court, a reason which made the state prosecutor to seek for a stand down.

Few minutes later, one of the defense team, Melron Nicole Wilson surfaced in court and informed the Bench that they had wanted to proceed with their case but unfortunately the subpoena was not sent. He craved the Bench`s indulgence to give them a short date.

Having heard the application of defence counsel, magistrate Marke Ngegba adjourned the matter to Monday 20th February 2023.
