Sierra Leone Winter Athletes who went on a two weeks training on Winter Sports on 11th January 2023 present their medal and gift to the National Olympic Committee of Sierra Leone at Howe Street in Freetown.
Two athletes and a coach went on the two weeks training course in the Korean Republic, the training was also followed by a one-day competition for athletes across Africa, and Ibrahim Kamara the Athlete from Sierra Leone won a goal medal and a gift from the Organizers.
Unisia Deen Kargbo the Chef De Mission who also doubles as the newly elected Treasurer at the National Olympic Committee of Sierra Leone while Presenting the athletes and coach to the Executive of the National Olympic Committee of Sierra Leone said it all started a year ago when (ANOCA) came up with the idea of developing Africa Countries more especially the warm climate Countries that want to participate to the Winter Games they are to nominate people to go and see the kind of training to go through for the sport. He added that the outgoing President of the National Olympic Committee of Sierra Leone Dr. Patrick Coker went along with some other athletes to Korea for summer training which was the first one and they went again for winter training; the two athletes and coach have now returned with a medal and a gift from the organizers.
Mohamed Sahid Kamara the head coach while introducing the athletes said the feeling is great because, during their time in Korea, it was a nice moment for them from Sierra Leone. After all, Ibrahim Kamara the athlete who competed in the Cross Country was outstanding as he won the most Value player (MVP) in the training.
He further that, at first the athletes faced a series of challenges in the training such as adapting to the weather conditions and the equipment to use was new to the athletes, however, they were able to cope with the trends of the sport. He called on the Government to help them with training equipment that will make the athletes more familiar with using the equipment.
Dr. Patrick Coker, the outgoing President of the National Olympic Committee said the initiative of going for the venture was in place and vouched to support them in any way possible.
Dr. Coker also recognized the contributions of the Chef De Mission who made it possible for the athletes to go through the second training which has been a good one; he congratulated the athletes and urged them to do more on the international stage.
Addressing the Athletes, the President of the Sierra Leone Olympic Committee Prince Sullay praised the outgoing President and was happy that he is present for the success of the young athletes. He called on the athletes to double up their efforts so that they will be in a good position to represent the Country in the next winter games.
The athlete Ibrahim Kamara said it was not easy for them to go through the training due to the many challenges, but they were able to triumph by bringing laurels for the country. He concluded by calling on government support ahead of their next encounter.
