Anti-Corruption Court Generates Five Billion Leones in 3yrs

The Judiciary of Sierra Leone of the Anti-Corruption Court  has informed the general public that a total of Five Billion , Three Hundred and thirty- eight million , four hundred and ninety-two Leones old notes(Le5,338,492,000,000,00 ) was generated from fines levied against 27 persons  that were found guilty of corruption.

 This information was noted in a press release dated Tuesday, 13, December 2022, as the Anti-Corruption Division of the High Court of Sierra Leone celebrate its third year anniversary on Friday 9th December 2022, since its establishment. It was established by the Honorable Chief Justice, His Lordship Justice Desmond Babatunde Edwards, on Monday 9th December 2019. This is the first Anti-Corruption Specialized court in the sub-region.

The press release also noted that since the establishment of the Anti-Corruption court Division at the law court building , a total of forty-seven(47) cases processed in 2021 were cases that were carried forward from 2020.

According to the press release, out of that number, twenty-four (24) cases were completed, with adjudication ongoing in the remaining twenty-two (22) cases.

 “Under my administration, the fight against corruption has been expeditious with the management of cases as well as transparent with regular news reports to update the public on what obtains in courts,” said Chief Justice Edwards, adding that monies generated from convictions or fines are also made public to enhance transparency and accountability in my administration.”
